How to work with width in WordPress

How to work with width in WordPress

Posted on 13. marts 202520. november 2025 by Peter

‘Work with width’ is not a just tongue twister, but also something you need to master in WordPress

Setting up a new WordPress website, you will soon have to make decisions about your site’s different widths. WordPress has four different types of width;

  • Full width
  • Wide width
  • Content width
  • Custom width

Once you know where to find them, they are pretty straight forward to work with…. as long as you remember:

A) You find the settings in the ‘Styles’ section – that’s the black and white circle (or half-moon), where you need to click ‘Layout’

B) You don’t need to specify the full width width, because it’s…. the full width of the browser window

C) Content width is width of ‘the normal’ content of your site, i.e. content you don’t specify the width for

D) Wide width is the content you specifically specify to use wide (but not full width)

E) Custom width can only be applied to blocks that are grouped – this means, that even if you just have a paragraph block you still need to create a group with just that one paragraph. Then you can adjust the custom width of the group.
If you want the custom width to be wider than the ‘normal’ content width you have to set the group to ‘wide width’ and then adjust the width of the paragraph in the group.

Then look no further than to the youtube provided by ‘Jamie WP’

Jamie shows you what you need to know. I like Jamie’s videos – and I’ve linked to his materials before in my post Create menu in WordPress – with full-site editor and the ‘old’ way
